Liberal Arts & Sciences Research Guide

Step #1: Encylopedias

Top three encyclopedias for research in liberal art:

Step #2: Library Books

Step #2a: Library Catalogue Search Tips

Search the library

For MANY results to browse:

  • try "subject keyword" using indian* OR aboriginal* OR first nation*
    • Note that due to earlier colonial practices, some books are assigned subjects that use problematic terminologies; the library staff is working on changing these practices, but in order to search for older titles in Indigenous Studies, using these terms will retrieve more results.
  • using OR between search terms will separate them and expand results
  • * will search for variants (e.g. Canad* searches Canada, Candian's, Canadianism, etc. )

To LIMIT your results:

  • add geographic area (Canada, Australia, etc.) if needed
  • add subject (appropriation, society, justice, etc.)

No Results?

  • use fewer search terms
  • try adding * at the end of a root word
