OCAD U Library 2017 Summer: Learning Zone

Zine Library Catalogue!

The staff of the Learning Zone, along with the staff of Visual Resources, have been hard at work making the OCAD Zine Library catalogue available online. Now you can search our collection from anywhere using Artstor Shared Shelf

The collection was recently featured on Artstor's blog, where Learning Zone Librarian Marta Chudolinska wrote about the origins of the collection, how we collect and catalogue zines and opportunities for creativity that come out of the zine library. That blog post was also picked up and shared by Cory Doctorow on Boing Boing

The catalogue in Shared Shelf can be searched by title, author, publisher, subject, material or technique in the search box at the top right of the screen. Once results appear on screen, you can click on the text below each cover image to read the catalogue information, including a description of the work, call number and keywords. You may also double click on the cover image to see a larger version of the cover.

To find the call number for a zine once you've clicked through on the catalogue information, look under the "repository" field (as seen below):

Figure 1 Exhibition

The Learning Zone's current exhibition, Figure 1, showcases the work of 12 upper-year OCAD University students. Working within the constraint of engaging with the tradition of figurative representation in some way, these artists worked across medium and style to interpret the human form and its significance. Approaches range from realistic life painting to the exploration of abstract forms. Some artists chose to focus on expression, gesture, or emotion, while others tackled our relationships to objects, each other and the spaces we occupy.

Figure 1 is curated by Francis Tomkins and includes works by Misbah Ahmed, Alexandria Boyce, Wil Brask, Will Carpenter, Jisu Lee, Wenting Li, Clara Lynas, Natalie Mark, James Okore, Rem Ross, Brianna Tosswill, and Dalbert Vilarino.

The closing party will take place in the Learning Zone on Thursday, June 29th.

Zine Library Open House

To celebrate Art Book Week, the OCAD Zine Library is opening its doors and asking the public to come in and browse over 2,000 zines by local artists and creators. The open house will be held on June 13 from 4pm to 6pm.

Toronto Art Book Week is a series of city wide events to bring attention to art book projects and increase the visibility of Toronto's art publishing community. For the Zine Library's open house -- held in the Learning Zone where the zine collective lives -- a selection of publications will be put on display based on their creative use of materials, varying formats and artistic content.

Stop by to read, meet other zine enthusiasts, find some gems and enjoy a few refreshments.
