OCAD U Library 2016 Winter: Learning Zone

Fomo Nomo

Feminist Fomo Nomo was an exhibition planned and executed by a group of students from OCAD U and York University (Trudy Erin Elmore, Magnus Frolov, Nazanin Khani, Tori Maas, Julia Pereira and Annie Webber), with mentor support from ARTIFACTS (OCADU instructor Pam Patterson and Leena Raudvee) and LZ Librarian Marta Chudolinska. The exhibition ran from November 10th to December 9th, 2015. The theme and process of the exhibition was developed collectively by the group. In order to open up the exclusive and regimented structure of exhibition procedure, the group continued to accept and add new work to the exhibition after the opening date, up to the exhibit's final day.

Description of the exhibit from the Feminist Fomo Nomo website: 

"Fomo [Fear of Missing Out] is anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on a social media website. As we are products of our current societal attitudes and trends, we’ve all experienced fomo in one way or other.

Feminism is anti-hierarchal movement that historically has worked to define, establish, and achieve equal political, economic, cultural, personal, and social rights for all; not only women. 

Feminist Fomo Nomo seeks to alleviate this anxiety, creating a safe space for participation—allowing all to contribute. It is an all inclusive movement which is why Feminist Nomo Fomo is an all inclusive project. "

Colouring Group

During the Fall semester the First Generation Program presented colouring in the Learning Zone every Wednesday from 1-3pm. Starting January 19th, students can add some relaxation to their busy days by colouring a page in the Learning Zone on Tuesdays from noon until 2pm. All materials are supplied by First Gen, so no need to bring anything. Just stop by and colour!

Career Development Drop-In

The Learning Zone is seeking exhibition proposals for the Winter term 2016 and we'd love to hear your ideas!

Here's the details: 

• The Learning Zone is located on the first floor of 113 McCaul Street, near the St. Patrick Street entrance. It is an active exhibition space that is visited by hundreds of students daily. 
• There is no application form or complicated process to follow. Simply contact Marta, the LZ Librarian at mchudolinska@ocadu.ca with your exhibition ideas and proposed timeline. 
• Students can contact us to arrange a solo or group show. Faculty can arrange a show of their students' work from a course, or display their own work.
• Exhibitions are usually up for 3-4 weeks. Winter 2016 exhibitions can be scheduled any time between February 1st and April 21st, 2016. Please contact Marta for the most up-to-date availability.  
• You are welcome to exhibit any two-dimensional works that fit on our walls (see the attached floor plan below for measurements). We can also display video (with sound, played on headphones), sculpture and performance. Unfortunately, we do not own any plinths so sculptures either need to be freestanding or be displayed on one of our tables. We are also not able to support work that features projection, unless you are able to provide your own projector. 
• The LZ can provide most of the standard hanging equipment required to install the exhibition, barring any special materials you may need. We have push pins, thumb tacks, nails, hammers, fishing line, a tape measure and level. Adhesives are not allowed on the walls, including double sided tape, velcro tape, etc. as these are very damaging to the painted walls. 
• We do not censor the content of artwork but will not exhibit anything that would fall under the definition of hate speech.
